When a renovation or new build finishes, what remains is far from a space ready to use. Cement residue, plaster dust in every corner, paint splatters, shavings, silicone on window frames and a layer of grime that seems impossible to remove. That is what post-construction cleaning is for.
What does a post-construction clean include?
A professional post-construction clean covers much more than sweeping and mopping. Work proceeds from top to bottom, starting with ceilings and finishing with floors.
The first step is removing bulky debris: small rubble, protective plastics, painter’s tape and leftover materials. This is followed by a general dusting of all surfaces, including walls, ceilings, mouldings, sockets and door frames.
Window cleaning on a building site is particularly laborious because they usually have cement, plaster and paint residue adhered to them, requiring scraping with a blade. Floors receive specific treatment depending on the material: stripping of construction residue, washing with appropriate products and, in many cases, an initial protective treatment.
Bathrooms and the kitchen are deep cleaned: sanitaryware, taps, tiles, grout, cabinets and appliances if already installed. Wardrobes are also cleaned inside and out, along with blinds, radiators and any visible fittings.
Why not do it yourself?
The temptation to save on this expense is understandable, but there are compelling reasons to leave it to professionals.
Firstly, specific products are needed that are not found in a supermarket: cement dissolvers, paint removers that do not damage surfaces, industrial degreasers and floor protectors. Using the wrong product can ruin a newly laid floor or scratch a new window.
Secondly, professional equipment makes the difference. Industrial vacuum cleaners with HEPA filters for fine construction dust, scrubbers, polishers and high-level window cleaning equipment are not tools found at home.
And thirdly, time. What a professional team of three or four people does in a day, one person alone could take a week to complete. And the result will probably not be the same.
How much does it cost?
The price of a post-construction clean depends on the size of the space, the type of work carried out and its current condition. As a reference, for a flat of 80 to 100 square metres, the cost typically ranges between 400 and 700 euros. For commercial premises or larger properties, the price is calculated per square metre.
When to book it
The ideal moment is when the construction work is completely finished: floors laid, paint dry, installations completed. If done too early, part of the work will need repeating. Coordinate with your builder or contractor to confirm the actual completion date before booking the cleaning service.
